Today is St. Patrick’s Day—a day that is typically filled with corned beef and cabbage, Irish soda bread, and green shakes and green beer. However, when you are trying to lose weight, feel great, and manage your body aches and pains, you can’t always indulge in your holiday favorites. Thankfully, it is possible to eat delicious foods that aren’t going to create inflammation in the body. In fact, you can eat deliciously while also reducing inflammation in the body! Just try a few of our ideas for healthy alternatives of your favorite St. Patrick’s Day meals.

First and foremost, start your day with a green beverage that will help you to feel great all day. Simply blend a frozen banana with one cup of non-dairy milk or water, and add several kale and spinach leaves. Add some stevia or agave to sweeten and you are good to go!

Potatoes and cabbage are packed with nutrients, so eating healthy doesn’t mean giving up your favorite baked potatoes and boiled cabbage. Potatoes are packed with potassium, copper, Vitamin C and Vitamin B6, manganese, phosphorus, niacin, dietary fiber, and pantothenic acid. Cabbage is an excellent anti-inflammatory and is high in Vitamin K, Vitamin C, Vitamin B6, manganese, fiber, potassium, folate, and more. Even though you’re cutting back on your St. Patrick’s Day favorites, you don’t have to miss out on potatoes or cabbage!

Pre-packaged breads contain many nasty additives, but when you make your own Irish soda bread, you know exactly what’s going in it. To make it even healthier than your traditional recipe of Irish soda bread, simply substitute a non-dairy milk mixed with white vinegar to create buttermilk.

For one loaf of bread, mix together two cups of whole wheat flour, ½ teaspoon of salt, and 1 ½ teaspoons of baking soda. Next, whisk together 1 cup of non-dairy milk with 1 tablespoon of vinegar, and then add to the dry ingredients. Spread into a loaf pan that has been greased with olive oil, and bake at 400 degrees for about 30-35 minutes.

It is St. Patrick’s Day, so you are entitled to a glass of beer! Choose a light beer and enjoy a delicious taste without all of the extra calories. You might be interested in trying Guinness, Purple Haze, Pale Ale, or Peak Organic.
