You go to the gym so you can get healthy and feel great, but then you end up in pain and are unable to exercise for a while. However, workout related injuries can easily be prevented with a few easy steps. It spares you the recovery time and pain later on!

During a workout, you may find yourself experiencing a muscle pull and strain, sprained ankle, knee injury, shoulder injury, tendinitis, shin splint, or wrist pain or dislocation. While these sound like incredibly uncomfortable injuries, we all know how important it is to exercise. The stronger we are, the safer our bodies become. Thankfully, Premier Health is here for you if you do experience a workout related injury. We can help you to feel better in no time!

When suffering from an injury, Premier Health can provide you with chiropractic care and chiropractic adjustments, acupuncture, corrective exercises, massage therapy, therapeutic exercises, ice-heat therapy, muscle stimulation, nutritional counseling, sports chiropractic or Pilates. If you suffer from an injury acquired during exercise, we will get you back to the gym in no time.

To avoid further injuries, remember to check with your chiropractor before starting an exercise program if you are a woman over the age of 55 or a man over the age of 45. Also, give your body at least one or two days off each week for rest. By giving your body time to rest each week, you are giving your body a chance to recover, which can prevent further injuries.

Remember that each workout should begin with a warm-up and end with a cool-down. During a warm-up, ride an exercise bike, jog in place for five to ten minutes, or jump rope. Warm-ups get your body ready for exercise while increasing your heart rate and loosens your muscles and joints. A cool-down brings your heart rate back to normal and can best be done by taking a five or ten minute walk.

Stretching is also extremely important before and after a workout. Do some gentle stretching after each warm-up and cool-down to reduce the risk of muscle soreness and injury and to increase flexibility.

During your workout, don’t push yourself further than you are comfortable with, and don’t overuse one set of muscles, which can lead to tendinitis and shin splits. Vary your workout by trying different exercise routines on each day of your workouts. For example, run one day, lift weights another day, and cycle or swim a different day.

These tips will keep your body safe during workouts and help you to avoid injury. However, Premier Health’s excellent chiropractic care can help you during an injury, so don’t hesitate to contact us for any of your needs. Whether you took a fall on the ice this winter or you overworked yourself at the gym, we are here to help!
