Benefits Of Nut Milk

We all grew up hearing about the benefits of dairy and cow’s milk, but recent studies show that cow’s milk can actually cause more harm to the human body than good. Back in the day, soy milk was a popular substitution to cow’s milk, but over the past few years, nut milks have become more and more popular. With brands such as Silk or Almond Breeze displaying their television commercials on a daily basis to promote almond milk, more and more people are ditching their cow’s milk for the healthier option.

Nut milks, specifically almond milk, are an excellent option for people looking to lose weight. Unsweetened almond milk contains only 60 to 70 calories per cup and is low in fat and carbohydrates. Almond milk also contains no saturated fat. One cup of plain almond milk has a Recommended Daily Value equivalent to 10% for Vitamin A, 25% for Vitamin D, and 50% for Vitamin E.

Almond milk is rich in calcium and one cup offers approximately 300 mg of calcium, meeting 30 percent of the Recommended Daily Value for calcium. Almond milk contains 25% of your daily recommended Vitamin D intake and 30% of your daily recommended calcium intake, so almond milk is an excellent option for building strong bones and preventing osteoporosis. Plus, almond milk is an excellent source of nutrients for anyone with a dairy or lactose allergy.

While cow’s milk does make bones stronger in the short term, it actually erodes bone-making cells, which increases a person’s risk of osteoporosis in the long term. Plus, cow’s milk is highly processed and filled with antibiotics. A healthier option is choosing a non-dairy milk such as almond, hemp, soy, rice, or flax.

While almond milk tastes similar to cow’s milk, the transition from dairy to non-dairy can be tricky. Start by adding almond milk to your bowl of cereal, baked goods, or in any recipe where you would use cow’s milk. You won’t even notice the difference. Eventually, you will feel comfortable drinking a full glass of almond milk and you will experience the many amazing health benefits as well.
